Protection is based on two scales of limits. On the one hand, a set of 18 geological sites on which extraction and collection of any fossil form are prohibited. On the other hand, there is a vast protection zone spread over 59 municipalities where the extraction of fossils is prohibited and the collection of naturally cleared forms is tolerated, if practiced in limited quantities. Among the geotopes highlighted are the ammonite slabs of the Isnards at Digne, the fossiliferous sites at ichtyosaurus of La Robine or the site at sireniens of the ravine of Tabori at Taulanne.

Sisteron and the Durance valley
"Sisteron, pearl of Haute Provence" is a must and a special stopover between the high mountains and the sea.

A link between Provence and Dauphiné, the Durance, an impetuous river, boldly pierces the "majestic clue" of the Baume rock with vertical strata of limestone, renowned throughout the world and considered by geologists as a real curiosity. Come to bathe the walls of the old city tirelessly.

The city offers a labyrinth of stairs and small vaulted streets baptized "Androne", naturally following its picturesque staircase, to reach the proud citadel, of which Henry IV liked to say that it was "the most powerful place Of his kingdom. "
The architectural heritage of the Citadel (M.H.) consists of a vast array of military works from different periods. Serving as a showcase for the theater of greenery, it hosts each summer a prestigious cultural event, the "Nuits de la Citadelle", the first and oldest festival of Provence that was created by Marcel Provence in 1928. Music, theater and dance come as So many graces enchant its walls. Walls which are guessed by the secular presence of their towers, safeguarded by the visit of Prosper Mérimée, and only remains of the urban enclosure built around 1370.
Not far from the Tour de la Médisance, Notre Dame and Saint Thyrse Cathedral (12th century, listed as a historical monument), a major building of the Provençal Romanesque Art, displays its solemn presence.
